Bristol-Myers Squibb

Designing a new AWS cloud solution that is scalable and future proof

completed without any issues

The client

Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) is a global bio-pharmaceutical company working to develop and deliver new and innovative medicines to combat a variety of diseases.

BMS and their agency, huumun, required support for a custom application used by physicians and patients in Australia to manage the prescription and use of specific oncology-related medicines online. The site is transactional and all functionality is key.

The challenge

BMS’ existing platform for the application was not fit for purpose and was also unsupported. Moreover, huumun was anticipating an increased engagement with BMS in the future as well as the introduction of more robust SLA requirements, meaning re-architecting and re-thinking of the support model was required.

BMS and huumun required a technical support partner who could assist with the design, management and provision of a new supported cloud hosting environment.

The solution

Just After Midnight proposed a brand new cloud solution on Amazon Web Services (AWS) that could scale and would future proof the custom application. It also meant that the client would not need to hire an additional internal DevOps team in Australia.

Our focus was on splitting the production and UAT environment, looking at how the build and DevOps processes can work in addition to fixing existing issues.

Our solution included:

  • Cloudflare CDN: improving both performance and availability. It also includes a Web Application Firewall and DDoS protection.
  • Load-balanced web servers: effectively managing traffic
  • RDS in production: a managed service provided by AWS which supports an array of database engines to store and organise data and help with database management tasks, such as migration, backup, recovery and patching
  • S3 buckets: managing media content. An S3 bucket can store up to 5 terabytes of data and is designed to provide 99.999999999% durability of objects over a year
  • Terraform, Octopus Deploy and TeamCity: DevOps tools allowing the creation of separate environments to be created when pushing code live, avoiding downtime

In addition to this, we provided a 24/7 infrastructure and application support layer so that BMS is protected round-the-clock. Our L1 team was given in-depth training by the agency so that they would be able to answer any queries from the BMS admin team and complete requests to change patient, physician or hospital details around-the-clock, meeting the clients SLAs.

Results

  • Zero incidents causing downtime since starting support
  • Drama free migration to AWS, everything went smoothly and according to plan
  • Thanks to our 24/7 L1 team, BMS administration service requests are completed quickly and immediately, not just in AU daytime
